FAQs About Automotive Loading Ramps
Can I use the same ramps for both a step deck and a flatbed trailer?
Possibly. Step decks and flatbeds have different deck heights, so even if you're loading the same vehicle on each trailer type, they could require different ramps to ensure a safe loading angle.
Step deck trailer deck heights are usually between 18" and 26", whereas standard flatbed deck heights are higher at 32" to 36". The taller the trailer, the longer the ramps will need to be.
How steep is too steep for loading a low-clearance vehicle?
If you're loading a low-clearance vehicle for transport onto a trailer that isn't specifically for auto hauling, carefully calculate the approach angle. There's a good chance that you will need a grade as low as 4.5 degree or more. If that's impractical or realistically impossible with your trailer and ramp combination, consider supplementing with additional ramps to reduce the approach angle artificially, angling your trailer bed if possible, or switching out the trailer for a lower one that will result in a lower approach angle.
How should loading ramps be stored and secured during transport?
Much the same way as any other cargo, with winch straps or similar. For pin-end ramps, if you have enough room under your trailer you could consider installing ramp hanger brackets to keep your deck clear and your ramps not only secure but also locked up.
What maintenance is required to keep commercial loading ramps in safe working condition?
Our aluminum loading ramps are low maintenance and won't rust in the same manner as steel. Still, we recommend cleaning them of dirt and debris regularly, and always inspect them prior to each use to ensure they are in proper working condition.
